Help Build Stronger Thinkers Through Play!
Math Adventures brings playful math experiences into Wilder classrooms. Students work in small groups with parent volunteers to explore puzzles, games, and activities that get them thinking, talking, and having fun with math.
You don’t need to be a math expert to volunteer. Activities and instructions are provided — just bring your curiosity and enthusiasm!
About the Program
Math Adventures gives students a chance to experience math in a different way: experimenting with ideas, trying different strategies, and solving problems together.
Volunteers work with small groups of students during the school day. You’ll guide the same activity several times as groups rotate, giving you plenty of opportunity to get comfortable with it.
Over time, volunteers also get to know the students in their classroom — how they think, how they work together, and how their confidence and problem-solving skills grow.
Who Should Volunteer?
Role: Volunteer
A great fit if you’d like to:
- Work directly with your child and their classmates
- Share your enthusiasm for thinking, exploring, and problem solving
- Get to know the students and watch them grow as thinkers throughout the year
Most volunteers participate about once a month, depending on the number of volunteers in their classroom.
Role: Classroom Lead
Each classroom also needs one Classroom Lead to make Math Adventures possible in that classroom.
The Classroom Lead coordinates the program for their classroom: working with the teacher, organizing volunteers, and helping sessions run smoothly.
You don’t have to do it all yourself — the role is about bringing people together so the program can happen consistently throughout the year.
What Does a Session Look Like?
Math Adventures takes place during the school day. Typically, two parent volunteers work with about half the class at a time, playing math games together.
Before each session, volunteers coordinate to choose a game—or a few games—from the Math Adventures library. You can learn them ahead of time using online resources and support from other volunteers.
Once you’re with the students, there’s plenty of flexibility. Spend the whole session digging into one game, or switch things up as students’ interest and energy become clear.
Sessions generally take 30–60 minutes, depending on the grade level.
