Room Parent Roles & Responsibilities
- Plan class parties (usually Halloween, Valentine’s Day, and end of year celebration, but confirm with the teacher). Decide on activities, supplies and food needed, and share a SignupGenius with class parents. Time-saver tip: when logged into the volunteer account of SignupGenius, find a similar signup, “duplicate” it, and change the details to suit your own event.
- Work with the teacher to schedule their monthly Math Adventure and Art Docent sessions, and ensure they have volunteers to cover those sessions.
- Set a schedule with the teacher to do main office workroom tasks for them (making copies, hole punching, pencil sharpening, etc.).
- Work with the teacher to plan a class field trip. Some grades have a “signature” class trip; for example, Kindergarteners always go to a pumpkin patch. Some grades have never gone on a field trip; work with the teacher to plan their grade’s own signature trip that can recur every year.
- Work with the Art Night team in spring to make a themed basket filled with items contributed by parents for the Art Night silent auction.
- Optional: coordinate teacher gifts on behalf of classroom parents.
Best Practices
- Each classroom teacher should select 2-3 room parents.
- The room parents and teacher should meet at the beginning of the school year (before the end of September) to discuss the teacher’s support needs and plans for the year. Be sure to set a recurring monthly day for Math Adventures.
- Room parents should clearly delineate the responsibilities below among team members to ensure coverage of tasks throughout the year (for example, one volunteer can be the point person for class parties, another for making copies and assorted office work, and another for field trip planning).
